5-Point Checklist For Installing A New Exhaust System

A car exhaust system is synonymous with the breathing system. Sometimes, a driver can drag the exhaust pipes over rugged rocks or bumps causing damages to the mufflers. This is the point where a car owner considers replacing the system with a new one. Damage of an exhaust system can be caused by various factors like the perforations on mufflers and blown header gaskets which create a disturbing noise in the car. It is of utmost importance that you understand the functioning of an exhaust before installing a new one.  You must now how to choose mufflers, headers, pipe sizes, and their exact locations. Here is a glimpse of all that you need to know.

  • Headers

These are pipes that emanate from an engine block. For instance V8 consists of 8 headers. Different individuals have different tastes of header designs. Headers also vary in terms of performances.
  • Mufflers

Performance exhaust mufflers are found at the end of the exhaust pipes. Their work is to muffle. The loudness of mufflers differs from models to models. They also determine the flow of air; they can speed up or slow down air flow.
  • Pipe size

Large pipes increase the speed of the air flow ad deepens the exhaust sound. A large pipe reduces the pressure and heat. High performance truck exhausts have open headers whereby there are no mufflers at the end hence providing the fastest system with high horsepower.
  • Where to run your pipe

The performance of a system dictates the location of pipes. Pipes placement is a matter of style and sound. You can have pipes at the sides or around the back wheels. The other design is having pipes between front and rear wheels. Then we have the typical single pipe which runs straight to the rear exit.
  • Styles of running the pipes

The exhaust can be customized in different styles. For instance, you can have a single straight pipe tucked next to driveline. You can have it tighter by mounting it above the back axle. Mandrel bend is the commonest design but there are others like curving around wheels or flat bends which are ridged in a way that affects the pressure of exiting gases.

Exhaust systems affect a car in many ways. A change in the system can make you feel like you are driving a completely new vehicle. Car owners need to understand the full installation of exhaust system as well as replacement procedures. Then they need to follow strictly the process of making a suitable system through selection of appropriate headers and mufflers that enhance the performance. If you go through these processes, you will certainly be impressed the difference made in the car as far as sounds, handling, and feels are concerned.
